On Friday the 27th of June, the red carpet was rolled, out once again, and the stars gathered at the Nautilus Theatre for the 3rd Annual Film and Music Entertainment (FAME) Awards, presented by the Port Lincoln City Band.

This was the 3rd year the Port Lincoln City Band has produced an awards night for Original Music Video & Short Films created locally, presenting cash prizes and trophies to the winners. Designed to encourage participation in performing arts, using digital technology & offering an arena to showcase  artists own works,  the FAME Awards are open to anyone.

“This year we were pleased to have a record number of entries in the Music Video Category with an impressive amount of variety & talent shown ” President of the Port Lincoln City Band, Valerie Staunton said.  “The entries for music video were of a particularly high calibre this year. It was great to see such variation in the short film category, including time lapse, stop motion & scripted stories”.

MC’s Emma Pedler & Steve Prout made sure the night ran smoothly & made the show all the more entertaining. The music for the night was presented by the FAME Band, a combination of the Port Lincoln City Band, St Joseph’s School, Navigators College & the Port Lincoln High school music students & teachers. Joining them onstage were Helen Marks singing a wonderful rendition of Stairway to Heaven with Gavin Proude showing his skill on the bass guitar & Scott McConnell on Trombone. Kat Williams was stunning on stage when she joined the band to sing Can’t help falling in love. Local singers Maxine Hage, Heather Brine, Rennison Earl & Margaret Waddington added some fun as nuns singing “I will Follow Him” backed by the “naughty nuns”, Helen Marks, Emma Pedler & Kat Williams.

Jay Thompson, a student of Port Lincoln High School & member of the City Band experienced conducting a band in public performance for the first time. With approximately 40 musicians on stage a brilliant sound was created for the variety of styles of songs performed, with the audience appreciating the rarity of the occasion & impressed by the sound & song choices. The audience was also mesmerised by the engaging solo performances by Leah Lovegrove, from the City  Band & PLHS, & Jess de la Perrelle from St Joseph’s School, both accompanied by Bill Kannaassar on the grand piano

After a short delay due to technical difficulties, the show continued after intermission & awards were presented.

The Port Lincoln Community Bank – Bendigo Bank FAME Award for the best original music video went to Mark Thomas & Jason Coghill for their entry “Innamincka”, a song about Innamincka and the tragedy  of Burke & Wills’ expedition.

The judges from Magic FM Morning Mash-up gave special mention to Lisa Webster for her entry “A Moment in Time” that was also of an exceptionally high standard, and Gavin Proude & Chelsea Clothier for their entry “I Don’t wanna be”.

Gary J Fisher won the City of Port Lincoln Short Film FAME Award for his entry, “The Sky of Eyre”, a time lapse of images of the beautiful skies over Eyre Peninsula.

The new addition to the awards night, the Raine & Horne People’s choice award, voted for by the audience on the night, was taken out by Gavin Proude & Chelsea Clothier for their Music Video “I don’t wanna be”.

The audience members enjoyed the 80s theme, many donning their blue eye shadow, big hair, shoulder pads & bright colours to join in the fun of the night. There were many dressed as Disney characters & others dressed like true movies stars in their best red carpet attire. Prizes were also presented to the best dressed on the red carpet, Winners were Chelsea Clothier (best dressed chick), Josh Gobin (best dressed bloke) & Ashlyn Santic (Best Costume).

With thanks to the many sponsors, particularly Port Lincoln’s Bendigo Bank, The City of Port Lincoln and the successful silent auction, the City Band has been able to raise approximately $3000 to help them continue performing music for the community & to plan the next FAME Awards in June 2015.

“We have been overwhelmed with the support from local businesses, participants & the public and we are looking forward to next year’s FAME Awards”, said Port Lincoln City Band President Valerie Staunton.  “We hope the word is getting out and we get more entries next year. There is so much talent on the Eyre Peninsula we are excited about being able to showcase as much as possible at our annual event”.

Unfortunately the projector at the Nautilus theatre didn’t show the true high quality of the films so the city band will endeavour to links to the entries on their website & facebook page.

Great feedback has already been received  from audience members, participants, volunteers & sponsors from this years event and many ideas have been put forward on how to make the event bigger and better again next year.

The planning of the 2015 FAME awards has started  and many entrants have expressed interest in entering again next year. We would highly recommend anyone interested in putting their entry in next year to get started now and to keep an eye on the band website, www.portlincolncityband.org , for more information on how to enter

Congratulations to the winners this year, and thanks to our many sponsors and volunteers
